 Prosecutors in the San Francisco Bay area have filed murder charges against a former transit officer in the shooting death of an unarmed black man. Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff said the murder charge was filed against 27-year-old Johannes Mehserle (yo-HAN'-es MEZ'-ur-lee) because the evidence indicates "an unlawful killing done by an intentional act."

An unprecedented 60,000 people have sent applications to the Presidential Inaugural Committee to volunteer for activities surrounding the swearing-in of Barack Obama -- even if it means simply giving directions or friendly hellos to out-of-towners at airports and Metro stops. With several days of events, including the Jan. 20 swearing-in, the committee needs 15,000 to 18,000 volunteers, officials said. That's three times as many as were called upon for the inaugurations of George W. Bush.

Barack Obama is calling for a national day of service to take place on Jan. 19, the federal holiday for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and the day preceding Mr. Obama’s inauguration as president. Mr. Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr. are planning to roll up their sleeves themselves that day and perform some as-yet-unspecified service work in Washington, D.C.

A TRINIDADIAN will be taking on a key role at next month’s inauguration of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States.
Collin Abraham, who scored another major event earlier this year as event planner for the wedding of US celebrities Beyonce Knowles and Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, is the man in charge of planning and decor for the inauguration at the Capitol in Washington DC, on January 20.
