The 2009 Black College football season was a potpourri of surprises, superlatives and the status quo.

The surprise: Cinderella finally got to the ball and stayed past midnight as Prairie View A&M won its first SWAC championship in 45 years, leaving traditional conference powers Grambling State and Southern University in the role of also-rans.

The superlatives: South Carolina State extended its MEAC winning streak to 19 consecutive games en route to the Bulldogs’ second straight conference title and the Black College National Championship.

ATLANTA (AP) — Ann Nixon Cooper, the Atlanta centenarian lauded by President Barack Obama in his election night speech last year, has died. She was 107.

Obama in his 2008 speech called Cooper an example of "the heartbreak and the hope" of the past century.

Former West Indies cricket captain and batting icon Brian Lara said yesterday it was on the invitation of the White House that he met with United States President Barack Obama on Sunday, closing day of the Fifth Summit of the Americas.

Lara met with the president minutes after he hosted a news conference at the Hilton Hotel, and sources say Obama described the batting icon as the Michael Jordan of cricket. "I always wanted to meet the Michael Jordan of cricket," is how president Obama is reported to have greeted Lara, who was accompanied by his 12-year-old daughter, Sydney, and TSTT's Lisa Agard.
